Sistrum presented “Quiet Seeds, Wild Embers” on May 19 and 20, 2023.  The concert’s theme drew from several recurrent ideas in the repertoire: the way lineage shapes identity, honoring the sacrifices of our elders, and recognizing the role each of us plays in preserving the earth and fighting for social justice.

This term, our music has transported us to ancient Mesopotamia, where the world’s earliest named author, Sumerian priestess Enheduanna, implored the goddess Inanna to vanquish her enemies in battle; 1980’s Sudan, where basket weavers prayed desperately for rain that would end their starvation; Nicaragua, where mothers sang sweet lullabies to their children; and Biblical-era Moab and Bethlehem, where Ruth pledged her loyalty to Naomi.

We’ve sung songs each rehearsal that honor the wisdom, wit, and grit of our grandmothers, remember the loved ones that we’ve lost, and draw inspiration from the women that have bravely forged the paths we now walk. Sistrum hopes that our concert will inspire the audience to pay tribute to those who bravely planted seeds of resistance and fondly remember loved ones that have passed on.
